Advertising Porn

As with most magazines comes text! I have been writing about all sorts of things, although possibly not as fashion-y as it should be… I am currently working on an article that was originally called, ‘Advertising Porn’, a shorter, snappier version of my dissertation, but has now mutated into “Sell Yourself”. I’m looking at why female celebrities objectify themselves in fashion advertising, and what effect this has. Although of course this is not just limited to fashion advertising! I’m 500 words in and struggling to be honest… may have to take a break!

This is one of the images I mocked up to support the article... The blue was actually red before it uploaded onto here! I was aiming for an image reminiscent of Barbara Kruger's work. This was made using Photoshop, I also handmade a couple with the text boxes in black and white... I think visually the black and white ones may work a little better, but I do want to echo Kruger work... perhaps it still does? In case the image is too small, the text reads, "Eva wasn't sure whether she should spray or blow her new perfume". Let me know what you think!

  2. Instant reaction -
"Hey, if you have to advertise your porn it probably sucks - not enough..."

Who is, now I think of it, an interesting case study for female celebrity because she's a Youtube star you get to know what other peoples reaction to her is through comments and ratings - I swear there is a useful idea in that somewhere...

I assume that the perfume bottle looking rather phallic and the "spray or blow" slogan is deliberate pastiche - in which case it works in a "so blatant it's subtle" way.
    Generally I like it.

I'm working on a reply to your comments on Editors letter 2nd draft - I'm flattered you'd put that much into a reply. ;-)

  4. The positioning of the bottle is cheeky. This is a woman who wishes to be respected in her industry am I correct? And that industry is what again? From this photo acting would not be my first guess... What must be questioned is whether the brand ties it's image to the celebrity, or visa versa?!. Who really won here, I certainly wouldn't be too happy if a brand did that to my photo but my guess is image was not as motivating as money in this instance. Really, what respected and talented actress would ever want herself to be portrayed in such a way? London Ell
