INSPIRED BY: VOGUE

I am currently reading Shoes: Fashion and Fantasy by Colin McDowell as research for an article, and just came across this image that I just had to share...

"High fashion Doc Martens in patent leather by Johnny Moke, shown in Vogue, 1986, photograph by Demarchelier" (page 211).

INSPIRED BY: Chloe

I don't really get the obsessive hero worship of Chloe Sevigny... Yep her fans adore her because she is so cool and unique etc, etc, and yet they try to emulate her- thus diminishing her uniqueness! Quite strange, no? She does take a pretty sweet pic though!

INSPIRED BY: just because you're cool.

Inspirational imagery... I can never get enough. Will be spending the next two weeks finishing pieces for my portfolio, and pulling together all the bazillion pieces of paper, notes and print outs to create my research book for the magazine. I'd like to put the blog forward as my research too though- a lot of the images in the book would have debuted here- in chronological order too which is pretty cool! The images above reflect all I love... rough edges, layering, tears, big blocky letters.... yum.
Perfect for sketchbooking...

Camilla for Pirelli

The Pirelli calendars are always amazing! When interviewing Camilla Johnson-Hill, she told me about her experience as the producer of the 2009 edition in Botswana- calling it the proudest and most memorable of her career... as well as occasionally life-threatening! She spoke of the photographer, Peter Beard, as someone who is continually pushing boundaries, and seeing the shots, it became clear what she meant. How special are these...?

I have featured a couple of these images in the mock-up of the mag, but Pirelli's official website has some serious words about copying, reproducing or publishing the images so I'm not sure they will make it into the final edition. Which would be a massive shame.

Fabien Baron

Art Director Fabien Baron is a genius in magazine design... Check out some more of his work for his company Baron & Baron.

*EDIT: There is a chance I could get an internship at his company in New York! If it happens, it will just be too amazing for words... just lots of ghyyiwdkjwhdjwydudaghg, etc.

white noise

While wasting the hours away looking for a new facebook profile picture (and a pic for editor's letter!).... I will find the most mundane distractions sometimes! I found the above images from  a weekend I spent in Berlin last October- a great weekend! I actually love the madonna one... how I wish I was old enough to experience her amazing-ness in the eighties!
and my new profile pic, just because! it was actually taken in the girl's loo in a club!? fun times...

what's underneath that counts

My favourite images are those that allow light to seep through, so dreamily, like these from Lula issue 4...

Colourful Thanks!

Thanks to Fred Butler agreeing to be profiled for the magazine, it's a rainbow burst of colourful magic- just like the lady herself!

Power to the T

06_katherine-hamnett-01.jpg

I am currently researching for an article I want to do about T-shirts and the messages they convey. Which can be self-expressions of political ideas & beliefs, they can also be ironic slogans, a parody of a brand, or simply a brand statement. T-shirts have drawn a deliberate link between fashion and the serious issues circulating in society.

Action Shot.

Now this is what Versace calls bursting out of the page!
There's a lush dress under all those graphics, and there
was me saying only today that I did not like red clothing!
oh how fickle I am...

Red.

Lily Cole photographed by Tim Walker
I just finished a piece about Red as a symbolic colour within fashion. Its pretty short, so I am thinking of doing a 'red' shoot to give the article more weight. That and I adore red hair and will use any excuse, not that I need one, to feature red hair in the magazine! The best 'excuse' really is being able to post these incredible pictures!
