At this moment I am working on a feature that highlights the change in female body shape that has occurred over the past century. It's a bit of a challenge as I set out for it to be an 80% visual thing, but there is also so much to say, I'm trying to strike a balance...
Check out this image Judith sent me of the type of mannequin used by Vionnet and Lanvin in a Paris exhibition in 1925...
and here's the more familiar model...
It probably is best if I let the images speak for themselves...
I'll also incorporate magazine covers and celebrity images into the feature.
Although it's a piece of memorable history that back in the inter-war period the ideal of feminine beauty was boy-ish and flat chested, people tend to look upon it as just one of those crazy things people thought in the olden days. They don't make the connection with their own ideas of beauty and body shape; therefore brilliant idea for a feature. Maybe you could get hold of the measurements of some style icons of the time and contrast with modern ones? I know I've said it's the ultimate in objectification, but it might make a more startling impact than just the pictures.
