DOES SIZE MATTER?

I'm such a girl. A big tall girl to be precise. Hovering around 5ft10, possibly more (it's true, I have never measured myself) the first (well, sometimes second) thing I would change about myself is my height. The ability to 'pull anything off' is suppose to be a positive factor of great heights, but not when you have the lumps and bumps that I do : ) My will to be shorter doesn't really encompass the fact that I am practically the same height as the hubby, (he really doesn't mind!) but my will to wear the most lust-worthy shoes without hitting my head on door frames! I often reassure myself that I'm lucky I cannot bring myself to wear or buy the stillettoed sculptures, I must save a small fortune daily, but my do I want to! My resolve is to start low and then the only way is up! So be nice- that's not a wobbly giant, it's just me.

I woke up to this on a post-it note that my husband had left me knowing I am trying to curb my make-up addiction. Albeilt unsuccessfully. I don't seem able to recognise myself without a bit of colour in my cheeks... and all the rest! Alas, I totally worship at the altar of war paint.

3D technology has quickly moved beyond the darkness of the cinema screens, (despite still seeming like a novelty to me!) and has acquired the backing of fashion giant, Burberry. Formidably bolstered by flourishing sales, the British fashion house has taken the groundbreaking initiative to stream its AutumnWinter10 collection, showing shortly at London Fashion Week, live at selected events in New York, Paris, Dubai, Tokyo and Los Angeles. This incredible news seems advanced to a tech-novice such as myself, but unquestionably incites absolute excitement about the potential of fashion's future. I came across this editorial, which would have blown me away simply for the phenomenal styling and electric hues without the incredible 3D angle. If this is the way magazines are headed, let's hope Burberry reproduce 3D glasses laced with their supreme style.

FASHION OVER PASSION?

Living in London I spend at least 9 months out of the year yearning for sun. (The fact I brought sandals a couple of weeks ago is ridiculously premature, especially as I never leave home without at least one pair of tights on... but they are so lush!) My defense against the chill (without resorting to chunky knit jumpers that quite frankly leave me looking like The Bulk) is to layer up as many vests, long sleeves, t-shirts and fine knit cardies as I reasonably can, not to forget the tights/leggings/socks/leg warmers/boots combo- trying to keep warm and semi-stylish is enough of a challenge without attempting 'sexy' too! In "pash moments" it almosts becomes comical when layer upon layer is strewn off still without success of discovering a flash of bra. However! In the coming months there will be no problem discovering the fanciful item- in fact you won't be able to miss it, and that is so the point. I am willing for the weather change so I can wear a girly bra top with a boyfriend blazer, alla Berardi, to achieve the fashion irony that tickles me so.

I got the opportunity to go to the SS10 london fashion week, what feels like forever ago! And caught the Vivienne Westwood show, and the Issa show. As I have mentioned, I have no camera- but here are a few of the shots a girlfriend caught on the day.

Chanel Iman and Coco Rocha on the catwalk would have been enough to get me over-excited at the Issa show, but to have the chance to see Ms Naomi Campbell take to the runway was a true Fashion Moment. So that is why she's labelled SUPERMODEL!

and a few familiar faces in the crowd... Jourdan Dunn sweetly seemed to gush in awe as much as I did when Naomi walked the catwalk!

I barely feel like I've had a summer and I'm buying winter coats and cardigans! How did that happen? Depressing... I finished uni and went straight into full time work, methinks I'm going to regret this decision for a while yet. Oh, it's been a while! I have been super busy in my new job as Brand Manager of JZD, a precious boutique in Clapham, London. I have been trying to get organised and find my feet, (I feel like I'm an imposter, I was a silly student only a month ago!!) But when I have everything underway it'll hopefully get better and you will start hearing about J to the Z to the D, gee, how cool am I! I have not posted in ages due to continuous internet failure, a broken camera and my starting a new job! I'm still adjusting to full-time work and curious to know when I get to have down-time as well as run errands?

Caroline Baker is an innovative stylist who began her career at revolutionary magazine NOVA in the 60s. She has since brought her vision to i-D (including the first ever issue!), Elle, Cosmo and The Sunday Times among others. She is now fashion director at YOU magazine.

How did you go about making your pages at NOVA different?

My brief was to be different in my approach to fashion coverage. My style became known as STEET STYLE reflecting the fashions on the people rather than from the Paris couturiers was my approach to styling- I was a little feminist in my beliefs and wanted to change the way women dressed- to dress for themselves and not just as female dolls for men- I was fascinated by menswear- how practical it was, all those pockets and draping instead of body hugging stuff- army uniforms were amazing designs so easy and so comfortable- the fact it didn’t fit properly was the appeal... I loved the way ballerinas dressed especially when they were rehearsing and so introduced leg warmers into the fashion arena. Sports and outdoor clothing was another source of ideas and then underwear as outerwear... Later I was to discover the power of the fashion media when ideas I had styled on my pages then became fashions on the catwalks and went on to become ordinary everyday wear we still use today.

I have just proof-read everything, which I thought would be hard because I've looked at each page for too many hours to mention, but the content is actually quite interesting! No slaps on the back here, I put that down to the amazing contributors I bribed to to take part (only joking! :) I have changed the cover again- image, font size, colour and all- I hope I'll be happy with it when i have had time to re-charge my eyes and mind. Today was the final shoot that will go into the magazine! I do have one more in the pipeline, but my vision for that will be a little arty and serious to sit comfortably in the magazine... as you can see today's shoot was about having fun, with model Cleo coming alive as a fifties starlet in lots of faded denim, leopard print and florals. Gorgeous.

I love the lighting and tone of this shoot, as well as the masculine/feminine nature of Nicola Formichetti's styling- I actually think that the flower on the hat, (as repetitive as it is) makes this editorial that much more special for Japan's Commons & Sense magazine. Devine. Nicola is creative director of Dazed&Confused and he can also be credited for that cover!

Camilla for Pirelli

The Pirelli calendars are always amazing! When interviewing Camilla Johnson-Hill, she told me about her experience as the producer of the 2009 edition in Botswana- calling it the proudest and most memorable of her career... as well as occasionally life-threatening! She spoke of the photographer, Peter Beard, as someone who is continually pushing boundaries, and seeing the shots, it became clear what she meant. How special are these...?

I have featured a couple of these images in the mock-up of the mag, but Pirelli's official website has some serious words about copying, reproducing or publishing the images so I'm not sure they will make it into the final edition. Which would be a massive shame.

London & I

I love being out and about in London when the sun is shining... everything seems to have been happily tweaked with the enhance button! In my wanders, which took me from uni on Charing Cross road, to an interview with Camilla Johnson-Hill (who is the nicest, most loveliest person! Will risk sounding really lame and call her an absolute inspiration... I can't believe I have managed to get such great interviews in the mag!) based in Soho. I continued down through Carnaby st where I spotted the girl below... classic case of 'it shouldn't work but it does!' She'll go on a street trend page, (all good mags have 'em, right!) I'm seeing a lot denim jackets and shirts- I have already claimed my lil brother's one as my own! loving the shrunken look.

I then went to Victoria to meet a photographer, Shaun Yim, to discuss working on a shoot together in the next couple of weeks based on the 'what's underneath...' post below. After this I went for a stroll behind the hustle and bustle of the station, mainly to stop tripping over the many suitcases, and found Elizabeth st, which was extremely pretty. I also spotted The Chocolate Society opposite this flower shop below that I must visit.

Well after all that walking I retired to Clapham Common for a drink and a gossip in the fading sun...

Before scooting to Notting Hill... Oh how I would love to live in a turquoise house!

Okay, so the idea of this blog was to give a background to the development of my magazine, which includes of course the inspirations for different things! And so, this isn't the inspiration for the concept I had necessarily, but I came across it and thought it was in the same vein. The shoot I want to do is based on style blogs such as The Sartorialist and Facehunter, who capture streetstyle at its best. Steven Meisel is a really great photographer, but I am not keen on this shoot he did for Vogue Italia in 2005, entitled Hollywood Style. Based on paparazzi shots of the street style of celebs, I think they forgot to make it ironic in the way that the fashion is actually good. I get the 'humour', but it's still a fash mag, no!? But that is my humble opinion...

This is a pretty old issue of Paper (a great name too), and although not a great fan of la lohan, one of my favourite magazine covers! Of course it has a lot to do with the handwritten font, something I adore but have yet to really work into in the mock-up layouts I have already done, surprisingly. And if we are to analyse why I like this cover even further I think the neutral tones against the white text has a lot to do with it. It's not something you see often I believe. Also the combination of, is it 7 different font types!? (ok, sounding slightly geeky, when simply I should just say LOVE IT.) But that many font types means a very experienced, confident and talented person created this. And it shows.

(very quickly, this was suppose to be short) And the red lips just make it pop!

I hate to call any part of the magazine 'a filler', so instead... a cutesy interlude?? Haha, that was probably even worse!

Anywho, I'm planning a feature page on films that have inspired/inspiring styling. It will be very visual, minimal writing... let me know your suggestions. Here are a couple I have thought of already...

Clueless, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Desperately Seeking Susan. Three very different but worthy contenders!

I thought that I would update all on the direction that the magazine is taking. It is no longer carrying the label of 'feminist' magazine. I think it pigeon-holed me a bit, everything was too close and revolved around issues! So I have taken a step back and looking at the magazine as a celebration of women... that phrasing definitely needs re-working but, you know!

I want the magazine to do two things:

Inform. When i was fifteen or sixteen, fashion pretty much meant being a designer. I didn't know all the many different options available within the sphere. And so I have been trying to get in contact with as many women within fashion who do things other than design womenswear clothing... so producer, shoe designer, editor, make-up artist, set-designer, illustrator... In fact Sophie Stephens who is a fashion illustrator has completed the most wonderful q&a for me! She's a star, check out her website: www.sophiestephens.com

By featuring all these lovely creative women in the magazine, the second thing I want to do is Inspire. Which I hope I will do.

This first issue will carry a feminism theme, I hope the magazine's legacy will be to make being a feminist a cool and proud thing for young girls to be!

Oops, I have been so busy and feeling bad that I haven't been posting much, but I don't want to post just any old thing for the sake of it. Hmmm... is nothing better than a half-hearted something?

At this moment I am working on a feature that highlights the change in female body shape that has occurred over the past century. It's a bit of a challenge as I set out for it to be an 80% visual thing, but there is also so much to say, I'm trying to strike a balance...

A huge issue that I am having, and did not even expect, is the laying out of the magazine... And it seems so easy! I am struggling to give the mag a strong visual identity, and that is what it is craving! I have worked so hard to get strong, interesting content, I need a look that will do the content justice. And so, as well as finishing the few interview questions that I have to prepare, and finishing a couple more written features, the layout is something that I have to seriously take into consideration, and in effect spend a couple of weeks on! gah,,, so so much to do!!! Anyone in London willing with knowledge to help out- please please do so!

I have to start thinking properly about layout and style. I am drawn to paint effects, handwriting, tears and wears. I want the magazine to look tactile, (and of course be tactile) with depth. Almost like a sketchbook feel, but done in a clean, sophisticated way. I guess to put it in a word, personal.

I have moved swiftly on to my third title. Thinking of a good magazine name not is not easy! What would you call yours?

Through my last thought process I decided that I had to find just one word that will sum up this magazine, and two thinking weeks later, that word is 'know'.

According to the imac dictionary because I cannot find the oxford:

1. Be aware of through observation, inquiry, or information

These are the meanings that I want the reader to be synonymous with throughout the magazine.

Actually a true, but rather random fact. Here is the point of my pathetic play on words ( I love alliteration!)... so far, so-so...

I have pretty much succumbed to the fact my life is not mine until I hand this magazine file to the printers, but it gets a little frustrating from time to time. It's like having a child I guess! I am supposed to be looking after my niece tonight actually, but after a third day of writers block I am 'sharing' the responsibility with my mum. Which means I have locked myself in my room with a grumpy "don't even ask face" on... oops. Not that I'm getting anywhere with the article.

It's the t-shirt one, and I was really excited about it, but having done some research the topic is huuuuge, and I just haven't known where to start.

There is 2 weeks left until end of term which means only two tutorials left with Judith, and then I am writing this magazine solo. I have to do as much by Tuesday as possible to get as much feedback to do improvements as possible...

So I have a super-sized red bull, a valentines-esque box of chocolates, (they were on special offer) and a will not to move until I have reached at least 1000 words.

Here we go...

I have just finished the first article for the magazine- layout and all! It has been a slow progress but hopefully with all the ground work that I have been putting down over the last few weeks things will begin happening a lot more rapidly! layout not shown here- I need to leave some surprises for the magazine =) Here's a snippet of just under 200 words out of just over a thousand...

“If You’ve Got It…?”

Instead of condemning fashion models whose job it is to sell and display designer wares, media attention should point towards female celebrities who are using their bodies to objectify and sell themselves. Celebrities protest to being public property, but are showing us more of their privates than ever before…

It always baffles me when, approaching the visual feast that is the fashion weeks, the media begins to hyperventilate over the subject of size zero. As though the models, so exotic and ethereal, are singularly fuelling this frightening body image. Agyness Deyn and Jourdan Dunn are the current reigning pair; although these girls who are at the top of their professional game are not scarily thin at all. Agyness is lankily slim and Jourdan quite athletic. I am not discounting the fact that many of the catwalk models are quite obviously underweight, yet I struggle to believe that they should be held accountable for the body issues held by the female masses. It seems apparent to me that the likes of Cheryl Cole, touted as the nations sweetheart and a Vogue cover girl, and WAG extraordinaire Victoria Beckham, need to be taken into account . . .

The previous post got me digging round to find my original sketch book for this magazine project from a year or so ago. As I may have mentioned on regular reader and commenter, David Abstract's blog, I have an interest in psychology and why people make certain decisions.

Enrolling on a fashion degree such as mine: Fashion Promotion with Communication- and with it being at Central St. Martins, a uni (or art college!) famous for allowing students creative freedom, I have been able to bring my personal interests into the mix and interpret them within fashion.

I have always had a curiosity of what thought process goes on when people get dressed each day. Each item we pull on goes for a reason... Is it colour orientated? Black to look smart? Yellow because it's sunny? Because its new? Or it's so old you forgot you had it? Because it's raining? Because he likes you in that top? Because you feel comfortable/sexy/confident/cool in that certain thing? Because it has memories attached? Or just because it was clean?

Who made up fashion rules? Why do some people abide by them religiously? Why is it so fun to break them?

I'm thinking of doing a photo shoot which focuses on breaking every typical fashion rule... Navy and Black... Double Denim... Socks and Sandals anyone!!??

I am very aware that these illustrations are terrible, do not judge me :)

What the F?

I have a weird fascination (there I did it again...) with the letter F.

Not consciously, I'm not that strange, but I do keep coming back to it. I am in the midst of trying to figure out a new title for the looming magazine, and all the words flying around in my brain at the moment begin with F.

Frolics, is the one currently being thrown around, which brought back me to a random phrase that I drew and illustrated, "Can there be frolics without the fun?" Which took me back further to my original idea for the magazine... yes, F.

I was going to call the magazine F*Fashion. Everything in the magazine would stem from F, it was all very exciting-F is a good letter! (Note fashion and feminism) The F would simply be a letter, or the obvious other- 'Fuck'. Yeah, a year ago I actually found this cool. Ok, honestly I don't actually hate it now. It meets my thoughts of not taking fashion seriously, it's style that I am inspired by anyway!

When I first pitched the idea to my tutors for the project, Hywel & Iain (R. Webb!!!) I was met with a such a reaction that made me think that the idea was absolutely awful so quickly forgot about it. A little while later, when our class was all together- which is a rarity in the final year, I realised another girl had the similar idea, but pitched it as a fashion dictionary. That must have been the reason for the tutors' horror after all! sigh... what could have been! The other girl is starting at the beginning of the alphabet with A, it's a shame that F won't get its deserving chance in the fashion spotlight! :)

I am currently researching for an article I want to do about T-shirts and the messages they convey. Which can be self-expressions of political ideas & beliefs, they can also be ironic slogans, a parody of a brand, or simply a brand statement. T-shirts have drawn a deliberate link between fashion and the serious issues circulating in society.

I smiled when I came across this editorial... I have been pitching a "Girls on Trains" beauty shoot earlier this week to those I am working with, and like many of my ideas, I was met with curious frowns. Well check it out, even legendary Meisel has got his hands dirty on public transport! =)

The shoot I want to to is more young and playful though, the girls here are evidently not impressed at being on the underground!

A Burst of Bright!

I have been googling about trying to find images that would communicate to you the visions of delight bounding about in my head. I want each picture to be huge colourful double page spreads that appear to 'burst off the page'. (The apostrophes are because I seem to have said 'burst of the page' so often when describing the kind of shoots I want to do, it somehow warrants it... okay I may not make much sense!?)

I'm so glad that florals have taken such an un-girly, clash-me-if-you-can route for another season! These, (the first catwalk images I have posted, not sure if it suits the blog?) are Erdem Fall '09 RTW.

So, the visions of delight that I mentioned? Well I found them realised here bySølve Sundsbø entitled 'Bloom' for V magazine. Utter perfection.

At the unholy time of 11am on a Sunday, I was across London in Old Street. (yeah, I'm not a morning person...) My assistant on the magazine, Sandy, and I had an appointment with Fanny, from Fanny and the Cave. I dare that name not tickle you! Fanny and the Cave is a fashion showroom with a host of unusual vintage treasures. Sandy and I delved around to find key pieces for the "Rescue Yourself Riding a White Horse" shoot. Sadly we are no closer to finding a white horse... Although we did find these gems among others. Above is a vintage piece that screamed Disney Princess at me...

Christian Lacroix red waistcoat and Frank Usher jacket. I love these pieces! The green Frank Usher jacket stole my heart when I saw Susie wearing it on Style Bubble. As reasonable as these pieces are, I saw about eight that I loved and want for the shoot, it all adds up. When we are dealing with those kind of pennies and taking into account that I haven't worked in forever and have no time to now... I'm going to have to make some heartbreaking sacrifices. .Poor me.
